Years ago, we were having dinner with a new family. We’d gotten to the point in the evening when all the children realized they were friends and they wanted nothing to do with us. The house was loud, but the table was finally quiet enough for real conversation.

The husband turned to me and asked, “Do you ever doubt your faith?”

This was an easy one. “Yes,” I said. “Plenty of times.”

He startled, like I’d just admitted to keeping a live ferret in my purse. “But doesn’t that scare you? And how do you get back to faith?” he replied.

“It always scares me,” I responded. “But every time God does something that can only be Him.”

I grew up Christian (which probably made me question it more, honestly). In college I studied world religions because I wanted to believe my religion, not inherit it. How could I be sure I picked the right one?

Here’s the truth: Every time I doubt the Lord, He shows up in my life like a banana peel in a cartoon. I’m scanning the horizon for answers, anywhere but straight! And then, perfectly timed, something so insurmountably serendipitous slams into my day-to-day, knocking me back to center. It’s like God is saying, “Nice try, Emily. I’m right here. Still the great I AM.”

Do I doubt my religion and my faith? Yes. And it can be scary.

But when I come to God with my doubt and fear, he frees me of both. He meets me with steadiness. The Bible isn’t worthy because a couple hundred people around the world keep deciding they like it. It’s worthy because it’s been tested, stretched, and shaken by millions of people around the world for centuries.

Mamas, if you’re stumbling through your own season of uncertainty—church, faith, life, love—don’t run from it. Doubt isn’t disloyalty; it’s often the doorway to deeper trust. Ask the Lord to show you where He is, and He will make your path straight.
