The F-Word

Matthew 6:8, 12, 14

6 Do not be like [the Gentiles], for our Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Time for full transparency friends, I’m a drop the F-bomb kind of Mom. And in this instance, I’m not talking about forgiveness (yet).

You know how sometimes the Holy Spirit really whacks you in the face with something?

A few years ago, a close girlfriend of mine mailed me this hilarious sticker (see pic below). And I laughed. She’s right. We are real Moms with real small children in this real world. Stuff F’n happens. And this week we both happened to be going through what I call a “misalignment” with our dear spouses.

The exact same day, friends, my devotional was Matthew 6:5-15. And while the Lord’s Prayer didn’t really stick to me, the C.S. Lewis insert from The Weight of Glory on Forgiveness did.

“To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you. This is hard. It is perhaps not so hard to forgive a single great injury. But to forgive the incessant provocations of daily life—to keep on forgiving the bossy mother-in-law, the bullying husband, the nagging wife, the selfish daughter, the deceitful son—how can we do it? Only, I think, by remembering where we stand, by meaning our words when we say in our prayers each night ‘forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ We are offered forgiveness on no other terms. To refuse it is to refuse God’s mercy for ourselves. There’s not hint of exceptions and God means what He says.”

Mic drop.

My spouse is no bully y’all, but I needed to let the F’s go, Forgive, and move forward into my walk with God—incessant provocations and all!

If you don’t have a bible you love and you’re a fan of C.S. Lewis, I highly recommend the C.S. Lewis Bible (NRSV).
