HWLF
(60 seconds) Our kids are growing up in a world full of noise. Adults are not immune to the overwhelm either. We’re all struggling to decipher the constant messages, opinions, and pressures.
John 13:34-35
I’m writing today’s devotional a week early because I’m currently sitting in the middle of a canyon at family camp with zero cell or internet service. It’s bliss!
Every year, my daughters and I go to the bead stand and make bracelets or necklaces. Last year, I woke my inner Younglife-teen camper and made a simple WWJD bracelet (oh, yeah).
At dinner, I asked my eldest, “Do you know what WWJD means? It was a popular thing when I was young.” She did not, so I explained it to her—What Would Jesus Do? A quiet, current-teen-camp counselor sitting at the same long table piped up. She asked, “Have you heard of HWLF?”
Curiosity struck. “No, what does that mean?!”
She responded, “He would love first.”
Yall, I almost started crying right there at the table. And I’m tearing up now thinking about this moment. Words escaped me. I’m sure I looked at her with watery, wide eyes, mouth agape.
Oh my God, how did I not think of this? Of course… He Would Love First. HWLF.
Our kids are growing up in a world full of noise. Adults are not immune to the overwhelm either. We’re all struggling to decipher the constant messages, opinions, and pressures. But this sweet teen reminded me of what matters most. Whatever your side of the political spectrum, love everyone first. When we live this out, we show our children what it truly means to love like Jesus.
This year, I’m making a HWLF bracelet.

Have more time? My grandfather’s favorite song was, “They’ll Know We Are Christians By Our Love.” Here’s a beautiful rendition of it by King & Country on YouTube.
