YH WH

(60 seconds) The unvoweled letters of Yahweh can be pronounced by inhaling and exhaling, mimicking both the sounds of breathing and God's nearness.

John 11:35

35 Jesus wept.

This has been a pretty hard week for us here in Texas. The grief is deep and it feels like the sadness is endless.

Tragedies like this create a lot of fear in us Moms. Christians tend to go into hope mode and say all “the things” which we’re meant to say (I don’t have to write them; you’re already thinking them, already heard them).

Hope is good. We will get there. But today, I want to give yall the opportunity to reject the common phrases. Don’t whisk away the despair, put up walls, and turn-in on yourself. Jesus never says this life will be easy. We don’t have to be OK rn.

So often this week, I have not known what to pray. My words feel inadequate, repetitive, then meaningless. Semantic satiation.

I find myself falling back on the easiest prayer of all. And it’s really just a sound: Yahweh.

Don’t ask me who put this together over the last 2,000 years (or even who/where I learned it), but there’s a prayer that’s as easy as breathing. Have you ever noticed the unvoweled version of our savior’s name sounds just like a breath?

Part your lips and breathe in. Do you hear it? “Yh-”

Breathe out your mouth. Do you hear it? “-wh.”

Friends, we do not have to be eloquent. We do not need the right words. Sometimes, we just have to keep breathing. By choosing life and breathing for Christ, we draw Him nearer to us, nearer to our hands, nearer to our feet, nearer to this ground we’re kneeling on. He does not help us avoid the pain, but He does promise to bring us through it.

Next week, we can ask all the questions, the hows and whys… For now, use your body and breath to draw Christ near to those who have lost.
